Form I-485, officially called Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, is used by certain noncitizens already in the United States to apply for a green card (lawful permanent residence) without having to leave the country.

What Is Adjustment of Status?

“Adjustment of status” means changing from a temporary immigration status (like a visa or asylum) to lawful permanent resident status. Form I-485 is the core application in that process.

Who Can File This Form?

You may be eligible to file Form I-485 if you:

  • Were sponsored by a family member or employer (with an approved Form I-130 or I-140)
  • Are an asylee or refugee
  • Are applying under certain special programs (such as VAWA, U visa, or T visa)
  • Have a diversity visa or other legal basis

Key Information

  • Filing fees are $1,140 (plus an $85 biometric fee in most cases)
  • You may apply for a work permit (Form I-765) and advance parole travel document (Form I-131) at the same time
  • The process can take months to years, depending on your category and country of origin
  • Filing Form I-485 generally allows you to stay in the U.S. while your application is pending
