How to Apply for Work Authorization (EAD)
What Is an EAD?
An Employment Authorization Document (EAD), also known as a work permit, allows certain non-citizens to legally work in the United States. It is not automatic — you must apply for it using the correct form and evidence.
Who Can Apply?
You may qualify if you are:
- An asylum applicant (150 days after filing I-589)
- In Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
- Applying for Adjustment of Status (green card)
- A DACA recipient
- Awaiting certain court decisions

Step-by-Step Instructions
- File Form I-765
- Official USCIS work permit form
- Download: uscis.gov/i-765
- Submit Required Documents
- Proof of eligibility category (copy of I-589 receipt, TPS approval, etc.)
- Copy of current photo ID (passport or prior EAD)
- Passport-style photos
- Filing fee or fee waiver (Form I-912)
- Mail the Application
- Follow the mailing address instructions on the USCIS site based on category and location
- Receive a Decision
- If approved, you’ll receive your EAD card by mail
- Processing time varies by category

When to Renew
